A significant number of Yahoo users have faced the frustrating experience of losing access to their accounts due to a variety of reasons. These issues, which can often be avoided with just a little extra attention and action, have prompted our team to seek a solution. We aim to enhance account security by raising user awareness about the importance of taking proactive security-related measures.
The challenge of addressing the risk of account loss requires user engagement, yet security review is not the primary focus for the majority of Yahoo users.
Initially, I designed a nag screen with bold messages and vivid illustrations to appear post-login, aiming to heighten user concerns about security. However, the team and I worried that this might unsettle users or appear scam-like.
I proposed integrating a security reminder within the Yahoo Mail interface, where 95% of our users are active, to promote the Account Health Check feature and build trust. However, the Yahoo Mail team concerned that adding non-ad content like AHC could decrease their ad revenue.
The original design of the account issue resolution flow was asking users to take all actions in one modal. I simplified it by dividing tasks into a linear flow, with each page focusing on a single goal and action, enabling users to complete tasks more efficiently.
All test participants successfully navigated the AHC flow, finding it straightforward and well-guided. Despite initial scam concerns, users appreciated the clear messaging and preferred advance email notifications. Additionally, technical constraints on user redirection unexpectedly benefited both the business and users.
